Things to Consider When Buying a Commercial Business Door

Five things to weigh when choosing a new entry door for your business, from budget to materials.

Your entry door is the first thing customers see and touch, so it shapes their first impression of your business. Here's what to think about before you buy.

1. Set Your Budget

Your budget decides the materials, style and features you can choose from, so start there, and include installation and hardware in the number.

2. Style and Function

The door has to look right and work hard. A retail store may want a full-glass entrance that shows off its products; a warehouse needs a tough steel door that stands up to deliveries.

3. Security

For most businesses, security matters most. Choose a sturdy door and frame that resist forced entry, with quality locks and, where it makes sense, electronic access control. Where the building code calls for it, you'll also need fire-rated doors and closers, panic hardware on exits and an accessible entrance.

4. Appearance

Your door affects how customers see your business. Choose one that improves your curb appeal and suits both the building's exterior and the space inside, from the colour and finish to the hardware.

5. Materials

  • Wood: warm and welcoming; popular for cafés and restaurants.
  • Glass and aluminum: a clean, modern look for shops, malls and offices. Aluminum is durable, rust-free and good value.
  • Steel: the strongest choice for security, ideal for back doors and warehouses.
